The antecedents and outcomes of organizational commitment (OC) have been studied extensively over the last three decades. While the majority of research has focused on the OC of employees working in organizations based in a single country or region, studies have also emerged examining the OC of employees working in multinational corporations (MNCs). However, there has been no attempt to comprehensively review and synthesize the literature in this area, limiting our understanding on how to effectively manage OC in MNCs. The present study conducts a systematic review of empirical literature on OC in the MNC context. We review literature on the theoretical foundations, antecedents and outcomes of OC in MNCs, and evaluate empirical papers that expand our understanding of the nomological network of constructs to which OC is related in the MNC context. Building on the review, we then present a future research agenda, which targets opportunities for empirical and theoretical advancement of research on OC in the MNC setting.

Abstract This paper studies the joint effect of advertising intensity and product market competition on stock returns. Using a sample of the US market over the period from 1977 to 2018, we provide evidence that past advertising is negatively associated with stock returns and this relationship exists only for firms in competitive industries. Also, firms in competitive markets earn higher expected stock returns than firms in concentrated industries, especially among low advertising intensity groups. Our results are robust across alternative subsamples and product market competition measures. Our empirical estimates support the positive causal effect of concentration on advertising.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide novel insights into arts consumption behaviour and patterns of communication displayed by arts consumers using Peterson's theoretical framework, and to identify differences in the use of communication channels across arts segments. Design/methodology/approach - The authors conducted an a priori market segmentation study, with two variables serving as segmentation criteria, namely, the frequency of and the variety of arts events attended. The authors tested for differences in communication patterns. Findings - Four segments were created: low-frequency univores, low-frequency multivores, high-frequency multivores and high-frequency omnivores. They differ in their communication patterns and online behaviours, including their online activities before and after attending arts events. Printed materials and e-mail newsletters were the most effective communication channel for raising awareness of all arts consumers. Research limitations/implications - Understanding these communication patterns can help arts marketers to increase the attendance of low-frequency segments and broaden the variety of arts events attended by the univore and multivore segments. The generalisability of the findings is limited as the survey was conducted among online Australian arts consumers only. Originality/value - The paper adds the dimension of arts consumption frequency to the taxonomy of omnivores and univores proposed by Peterson, which is based on the variety of consumed arts only. The paper contributes to communication and arts marketing literature by identifying key differences in communication patterns across segments of arts consumers and the most promising communication channels to engage them.

Purpose This paper examines the factors that influence the work attitudes of employees and the conditional effects of family support on the job demand–turnover intention relationship.Design/methodology/approach The authors used a sample of 231 employees working in the manufacturing industry in Vietnam to test the conceptual model.Findings Drawing upon the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and job embeddedness theory, the authors found that employees' psychological capital and family support influenced turnover intentions through enhancing their job satisfaction. The authors also found that the influence of job demands on turnover intentions was altered when employees had higher levels of family support.Originality/value This study provides important insights for human resource managers regarding what may influence employees' job satisfaction and turnover intentions. The findings advance turnover literature by highlighting the important roles of both internal resources (psychological capital) and external resources (family support) in influencing employee turnover intentions in Vietnam.

Workforce diversity requires broader vision and scope in managing diversity so that there is greater inclusion inside and outside organizations. This paper provides this vision by extending the stream of workforce diversity research to community-oriented inclusion and its processes. The authors interviewed 34 people with disabilities and 40 people without disabilities who were stakeholders of community arts and sports organizations. The participants with disabilities were mainly arts audiences, artists and sports athletes, and the participants without disabilities were mainly managers and government officials. The key findings report the importance of inclusion through common interest groups being facilitated by (1) non-minority specific communal activities, (2) listening to minority voices, (3) multidimensional accessibility, (4) availability of organizational and natural champions and (5) cross-boundary networks and collaborations. In order to create more inclusive organizations, the authors suggest that private organizations need more community-oriented values, goals and strategies that foster boundaryless inclusion of people with disabilities and other minority groups in organizations and society.

Given that Nottingham (UK) has some of the most deprived areas and the deepest budget cuts in England yet holds the title of the UK's most energy self-sufficient city, this paper explores the question: how has the Nottingham City Council localized the urban sustainability fix to reach environmental goals? Applying the "urban sustainability fix" concept, we find that during austerity and devolution, Nottingham's response has been to develop creative funding schemes and commercialize environmental assets. This experimentation has resulted in two first-of-their-kind initiatives in the UK: a Workplace Parking Levy and a council-owned non-profit energy company. We demonstrate two risks of the urban sustainability fix in this case: that environmental initiatives are narrow and based on economic growth priorities, and that social sustainability is deprioritized. Further, we show how the "win-win" logic of ecological modernization is reflected in Nottingham's pro-environmental individual behavior change approach..

One of the outcomes from the global COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been an acceleration of development timelines to provide treatments in a timely manner. For example, it has recently been demonstrated that the development of monoclonal antibody therapeutics from vector construction to IND submission can be achieved in five to six months rather than the traditional ten-to-twelve-month timeline using CHO cells. This timeline is predicated on leveraging existing, robust platforms for upstream and downstream processes, analytical methods, and formulation. These platforms also reduce; the requirement for ancillary studies such as cell line stability, or long-term product stability studies. Timeline duration was further reduced by employing a transient cell line for early material supply and using a stable cell pool to manufacture toxicology study materials. The development of non-antibody biologies utilizing traditional biomanufacturing processes in CHO cells within a similar timeline presents additional challenges, such as the lack of platform processes and additional analytical assay development. In this manuscript, we describe the rapid development of a robust and reproducible process for a two-component self-assembling protein nanoparticle vaccine for SARS-CoV-2. Our work has demonstrated a successful academia-industry partnership model that responded to the COVID-19 global pandemic quickly and efficiently and could improve our preparedness for future pandemic threats.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the voice of Chinese and Vietnamese international students through studying the similarities and differences in their learning experiences and the reasons underlying their experience. Design/methodology/approach - In total, 57 Chinese and Vietnamese international students participated in focus groups and interviews regarding their experiences of higher education and their suggestions for improvement Findings - The findings show that Chinese and Vietnamese students had varying levels of challenges and different progress in the adaptation process and that Chinese students were more vocal and less satisfied with their experience of higher education than Vietnamese students. This is due to the mismatch in their expectation and the actual experience and the cultural influence. Research limitations/implications - The sample size is relatively small. This study only looked at Vietnamese and Chinese students in one university, which might have limitations in relation to subjectivity and bias. Practical implications - The findings provide useful implications for educators, institutional leaders and support staff to improve facilities, teaching quality and service to students. Originality/value - In the current era of internationalisation, commercialisation and mobility in institutions around the world, this study advances current research and provides timely insight into the experiential differences of the Chinese and Vietnamese student experience and their voice.

Sharing genomic variant interpretations across laboratories promotes consistency in variant assertions. A landscape analysis of Australian clinical genetic-testing laboratories in 2017 identified that, despite the national-accreditation-body recommendations encouraging laboratories to submit genotypic data to clinical databases, fewer than 300 variants had been shared to the ClinVar public database. Consultations with Australian laboratories identified resource constraints limiting routine application of manual processes, consent issues, and differences in interpretation systems as barriers to sharing. This information was used to define key needs and solutions required to enable national sharing of variant interpretations. The Shariant platform, using both the GRCh37 and GRCh38 genome builds, was developed to enable ongoing sharing of variant interpretations and associated evidence between Australian clinical genetic-testing laboratories. Where possible, two-way automated sharing was implemented so that disruption to laboratory workflows would be minimized. Terms of use were developed through consultation and currently restrict access to Australian clinical genetic-testing laboratories. Shariant was designed to store and compare structured evidence, to promote and record resolution of inter-laboratory classification discrepancies, and to streamline the submission of variant assertions to ClinVar. As of December 2021, more than 14,000 largely prospectively curated variant records from 11 participating laboratories have been shared. Discrepant classifications have been identified for 11% (28/260) of variants submitted by more than one laboratory. We have demonstrated that co-design with clinical laboratories is vital to developing and implementing a national variant-interpretation sharing effort. This approach has improved inter-laboratory concordance and enabled opportunities to standardize interpretation practices.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine Vietnamese international students' experiences with the campus learning environment by analysing differences in staff and student perceptions. Design/methodology/approach - Two focus groups (n = 12) and ten in-depth interviews were conducted with Vietnamese students and four in-depth interviews with the university staff (totalling 26). Findings - The findings show a greater divergence of views between students and staff on teaching and learning than English language proficiency and student support services. These key differences were influenced by students' prior expectations of their learning environment in Vietnam. Research limitations/implications - This study is limited to one group of international students and to one Australian university. Practical implications - The lecturers/administrators must have a good understanding of international students' learning backgrounds and expectations to enhance their positive experience; appropriate teaching skills and practices are essential for teachers to meet the current needs of students. More effective training for international students to understand the multicultural nature of Australia is also essential. Originality/value - This study contributes to the literature by identifying the experience of Vietnamese international students in a western university, which is, a relatively under-researched nationality compared to other Asian nationalities such as Chinese and Indian.
